The wreath has significant meaning for the season. Its circular shape represents eternity. From a Christian religious perspective, it represents an unending circle of life, eternity or life never ending. The evergreen, most frequently used in making wreathes, symbolizes growth and everlasting life.
Why are they placed on the front door?
It is believed that the holly wreath, with its sharp, pointed leaves, represents the crown of thorns worn by Christ on the Cross and the tiny red berries represent the drops of blood. When a wreath is hung on the door, it is viewed as an invitation for Christ and the spirit of Christmas to enter into their home.
Where did the tradition come from?
The origin of the Christmas wreath dates back to the ancient times of the Persian Empire. During that time, wreaths were believed to be a symbol of importance as well as success. They were much smaller than the present ones and were known as ‘diadems’.
